A man was fined one rupee and was imprisoned by Maharashtra court for calling a neighborhood women “chamak challo” (a flashy woman). The court fined him one rupee fine and sentenced to spend the rest of day in prison until court proceeding were over.

Reportedly she was returning from morning walk with her husband and her leg hit the trash can on her way upstairs. The complainant told the court that the man came out of his house and abused her, and no action was taken after she made a complaint to the housing society where both the accused and she resided.

The court found the man guilty under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code, dealing with “word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman”. This is punishable with a year’s imprisonment, a fine, or both.

The guilty man has given a written letter of apology to woman; therefore the court has given him minimum sentence.
